Established in the year 1996, the Department of History runs under the School of Social Sciences. The courses of B.A.(Hons), M.A.(with specialization in medieval and modern history), and Ph.D. are successfully running in the department. The medium of instruction in the classroom teaching as well as in the examinations is both English and Hindi. 5 year integrated UG/PG course (with exit option after successful completion of UG) has been introduced in the session 2009-10. The performance of the students of the department has been excellent through these years. With the start of Ph.D. course work programmes the department is actively involved in the research and developmental studies to encourage the academic interest among the students in the field of history. In this process the department organizes several lectures by noted historians and eminent academicians in the field. On the occasions various events related to the historical importance and dates associated with great personalities, the department organizes seminars and conferences. Apart from these activities the department also takes its students for educational tours to the places of historical and archeological importance and thus makes them acquaint and closer to the knowledge of history. For the research work and studies the students of the department have been able to availed fellowships and scholarships from UGC, ICHR as well as other agencies of Central and State government. With the motive of all round personality development of the students and to generate community feelings amongst them, the department also encourages its students towards active and successful participation in extra curricular activities through NSS. The admission into the courses is made through the Entrance Examination through CUET.

The History Department aims to make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities in Indian history in the context of world history. We believe that only a critical understanding of the past will enable the students to understand the present and help them look towards the future.

The objective of the department is to create better citizens who have proper knowledge about the past and present, so that they can ensure their participation in building a better society and advanced nation. Along with this, the objective of the department is to develop among its students the knowledge of interrelationships between global, national, regional and local history and to inculcate self-confidence in them through the rich history of India, so that they can successfully face the future challenges. can do.

Future Plans

The Department of History envisions a dynamic expansion of its academic portfolio to align with contemporary educational and professional demands. As part of its future plan, the department aims to enhance skill-based learning by offering vocational courses that foster practical competencies and employability among students. In addition, two new certificate courses—Jyotish (Vedic Astrology) and Vastushastra (Traditional Indian Architecture and Design)—will be launched to promote interdisciplinary engagement with India’s rich cultural and intellectual heritage. Furthermore, the department is set to introduce a Master of Arts program in Hindu Studies, providing a comprehensive platform for advanced exploration of Hindu philosophy, traditions, and thought systems. These initiatives reflect the department’s commitment to academic innovation, cultural preservation, and holistic education.
