About us

The Department of Chemical Engineering, functioning under the School of Studies of Engineering and Technology (formerly the Institute of Technology) at Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur, was established in 1997, coinciding with the founding of the institute. Conceived with the vision of emerging as a national leader in chemical engineering education and research, the department has continually strived for academic excellence, innovation, and societal impact. It offers comprehensive academic programs at the undergraduate (B.Tech.), postgraduate (M.Tech.), and doctoral (Ph.D.) levels, with B.Tech. admissions facilitated through JoSAA/CSAB or university-level counselling for JEE-qualified candidates.

The department boasts a distinguished team of 13 young and dedicated faculty members, many of whom are alumni of premier institutions such as IITs and NITs. Their collective expertise spans a wide array of frontier research areas including biomass-derived renewable energy, advanced water treatment technologies, catalysis, membrane separations, food processing through membrane applications, and membrane-based microbial fuel cells. Faculty members are deeply engaged in impactful research, interdisciplinary collaborations, and the development of innovative technologies addressing real-world challenges.

State-of-the-art laboratories equipped with modern instrumentation empower students with essential hands-on experience, encouraging experimentation, problem-solving, and creativity. The curriculum is carefully structured in line with the pedagogical standards of top-tier institutes and is periodically revised based on feedback from industry experts, alumni, and academic peers, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the dynamic demands of the global chemical engineering landscape.

The department also fosters a vibrant academic culture that transcends classroom learning. With a richly diverse student community from various regions of India, it promotes inclusivity and cross-cultural engagement. Active student bodies such as the Chemical Engineering Students Society (ChESS) and the Student Chapter of the Institution of Engineers (India) organize a wide spectrum of technical, professional, and extracurricular events that holistically shape students into future-ready professionals.

Students of the department consistently excel in academics, national-level competitions, research paper presentations, and prestigious exams such as GATE, reflecting the department’s strong academic mentoring and research guidance. Undergraduate students are encouraged to undertake research projects and contribute to scientific forums early in their academic journey.

The department takes immense pride in its strong and supportive alumni network, whose regular involvement contributes significantly to academic enrichment, industrial exposure, and curriculum development. Many of its graduates hold prominent positions in leading industries, research institutions, and universities across the globe, exemplifying the department's enduring legacy and global footprint.

Firmly aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the department is committed to continuous academic transformation, interdisciplinary integration, and stakeholder engagement. With an unwavering focus on excellence, innovation, and societal contribution, the Department of Chemical Engineering remains steadfast in its mission to produce competent, ethical, and industry-ready engineers who are poised to lead and serve.

Vision of the Department

The vision of the department is to establish itself as one of the best study centers of Chemical Engineering education to produce proficient and responsible Chemical Engineers to serve the needs of the industry and society.

Mission of the Department

The mission of the department is 1. To produce career-ready Chemical Engineers with high standards of ethical and social values and entrepreneurial skills. 2. To develop the research culture in fundamental and application-oriented problems to cater the societal and industrial needs. 3. To build a strong relationship between academia, industry, and other institutions of repute.

Achievements

The Department of Chemical Engineering has demonstrated commendable performance during the academic year 2024–25 through notable accomplishments in academics, research, student achievements, and institutional development. The department successfully organized the International Conference on Trends in Energy and Environmental Research for Sustainable Development (TEERSD-2024) under the coordination of Dr. Gautam Prasad Dewangan and Dr. Pankaj Kumar, and hosted the annual tech-fest EQUILIBRIO-2025, also coordinated by Dr. Gautam Prasad Dewangan. Faculty achievements included Prof. Amit Jain being appointed as an Editorial Board Member of three reputed international journals, while both Prof. Amit Jain and Dr. Saurabh Meshram served as subject expert members in faculty selection committees at engineering colleges. The research output of the department remained strong, reflecting a continued commitment to academic excellence and innovation. Faculty members contributed significantly to national and international journals, resulting in more than 250 publications during the period. These publications covered a wide range of research areas and demonstrated the department’s growing influence in scientific and engineering domains. The steady increase in scholarly output highlights the active involvement of the faculty in cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and pursuit of impactful solutions. This achievement underscores the department’s focus on quality research, contributing to its reputation as a hub of knowledge creation and dissemination. The department secured and continued projects funded by UGC (Dr. Ghoshna Jyoti) and DBT (Dr. Pankaj Kumar), while multiple high-value research proposals were submitted by faculty including Dr. Gautam Prasad Dewangan, Dr. Baburao Gaddala, Dr. Pankaj Kumar, Dr. Anuradha Nanewar Joshi, Dr. Saurabh Meshram, Prof. Amit Jain, Mr. Satyajit Bhattacharjee, and Dr. Neeraj Chandraker to agencies like NITI Aayog, DST, FIST, and international bodies. A patent titled “AI-based Carbon Pollution Detecting Device” was filed and published by Dr. Baburao Gaddala.

In student accomplishments, Abhishek Aacharya, M. Shruti, Shaswat Tiwari, and Nandini Dixit from B.Tech. were placed in reputed firms. Notably, Ram Manish Kumar and Omprakash qualified the prestigious GATE examination. Additionally, Nandini Dixit represented Chhattisgarh at the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on January 12, 2025. These collective achievements reflect the department’s dedication to excellence in education, impactful research, and the all-round development of its faculty and students.
